Marjorie C. Gurganus is a graduate of Cornell
University (B.S.), North Carolina State University
(Ph.D., Genetics), and of the Duke University School
of Law (J.D.). Prior to obtaining her Ph.D., Dr.
Gurganus worked in the fields of biotechnology and
human pathology for three major agricultural
biotechnology and pharmaceutical corporations on
subjects ranging from pesticide formulation to HIV
and Epstein Barr virus detection kits. Dr. Gurganus
conducted post-doctoral studies at the Max Planck
Institute in Germany, at the University of
Texas-Arlington, and at North Carolina State
University. She also taught biology and genetics
courses at Texas Wesleyan University and the
University of Texas-Arlington. Subsequent to law
school, she worked at the Genome, Ethics, Law and
Policy Center at Duke University Law School,
researching the technological, policy and
intellectual property histories of seminal genomic
inventions. Dr. Gurganus then practiced as a patent
attorney in New Hampshire prior to returning to
North Carolina. She has authored peer-reviewed
papers in genetics published in, among others,
Genetics and
Current Biology. She is admitted to
the bars of the District of Columbia and of North
Carolina and is registered to practice before the
